Our Legacy & Growth

Founded in 1976 by Dr. Paul Koch, Green Bay Oncology has steadfastly upheld a commitment to providing exceptional cancer care. Dr. Koch’s pioneering efforts in bringing medical oncology to Northeast Wisconsin and Upper Michigan set the stage for what has grown into the region’s most trusted network of cancer specialists.

1976

First to provide cancer care in Northeast Wisconsin

Medical oncology only appeared as a distinct specialty in 1973, and though cancer wasn’t rare the specialty’s role wasn’t yet widely understood. So when Dr. Paul Koch arrived in Green Bay three years later as the first medical oncologist in the area, he had a struggle on his hands.

He’d frequently have his wife Linda call the hospital operator and page him overhead so that people would start hearing his name. His first “clinic” was a little used hallway in the emergency department. Brief, uncomplicated patient exams would be conducted right out there in the hall; for more thorough exams he’d borrow one of the unused ER rooms.

Region’s longest clinical trial participants

Our commitment to cancer research is deeply ingrained in our ethos. By actively participating in cutting-edge research, we ensure that our patients have access to the latest innovations in cancer treatment, offering them the best possible chance for improved outcomes and a brighter tomorrow.

1983

1994

Care expanded to Upper Michigan

Dr. Paul Koch was willing to travel to treat patients in their home communities, going as far as Michigan’s Upper Peninsula so they wouldn’t have to drive to see him. That kind of direct service and scrappy adaptability is his greatest legacy to those of us who carry on his work.

Care expanded to Sturgeon Bay

We’ve always believed where you live shouldn’t impact your access to care.

First in the region to convert to an electronic medical record

Transitioning from paper to electronic medical records improved patient outcomes. By enabling providers to access records quickly from each location, digitizing records helped reduce the risk of errors and improved coordination of care.
