History & Future of Medicine – Part I: Mysticism to Mechanism

Illness has, at different times and places, been thought of as: punishment for sin, collateral damage in the wars between the gods, contamination by demons, or the product of our own fantasies.

Understanding how medical thought has evolved over the millennia can help us understand our own anxieties and priorities. And more than a few of these old ideas still linger today, impeding further progress.
